Samsung today announced the Exynos 980, its first 5G integrated mobile chipset. While the company had previously unveiled a chipset with 5G capabilities, the modem was not directly integrated with the processor.
On the Exynos 980 though, the 5G modem is integrated right into the chip thereby reducing power consumption and also increasing the available space inside the device. The chip is based on the 8nm FinFET process and supports downlink speeds of up to 3.55Gbps. It also supports WI-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.0, and a new MFC that can encode and decode 4K videos at 120fps. The NPU on the Exynos 980 provides up to 2.7x performance improvement in AI, camera, and AR-related tasks. The upgraded ISP supports camera sensors of up to 108MP and up to five individual sensors. It can also process photos from three sensors at once.
The Exynos 980 is a premium mid-range chip from Samsung which features two high-performance Cortex-A77 cores and six power-efficient Cortex-A55 cores. It also comes with a Mali-G76 MP5 GPU for enhanced gaming performance. The Exynos 980 goes into mass production by the end of this year which means it will start showing up inside devices from next year.
